Quarter One focuses on Improv and the Origins of theatre
Students learn warm-upa and numerous Improv games. Many are from "Who's Line is It Anyway". Origins deals with the tribal roots or theatre.
Quarter Two focuses on Theatre history from Greeks to Renaissance and the basics of acting
Students in a group will select a song or poem, (usually we've used Beatles songs), and turn it into a Greek style presentation with solo and chorus presentations. Masks should be created with paper plates or bags to depict character. Songs will need to be one that has a story line that can be presented with a "CONCEPT" which may need to be artificially imposed on the piece. The actors are not singing the song or any part of it. Examples: Yelllow Submarine with a crew and passengers, Maxwell's Silver Hammer in a courtroom, Eleanor Rigby in a graveyard, Paperback Writer in an agent's office etc. (2 minutes) 50 pts -
Mime Assignment
Students will perform a personal mime recreating an even they do with everyday kind of frequency. The objective is to create objects in space using only your imagination and the specificity of detail to create shape and size and feel of objects used. Examples are waking and dressing, fixing and eating a meal, washing dishes, brushing teeth, hair and makeup, walking a dog....doing homework anything you can rehearse at home with real objects and then replay in class. 3 minutes long (50 pts) Early Octorber
Assignment #4 - Commedia Del Arte
Students will create a "Scenario" based a popular television sitcom using stock characters and rehearse and perform the scene created. (2-5 Min) 50 pts. November
Assignment #5 - Renaissance
Students will either do a scene or monologue from Shakespeare or a scene from the textbook to show acting skills developed
Playwright and play report
Student or a pair of students will report on a playwright from the Greek through Renaissance periods with a powerpoint or visual presentation. Students should read or view a play by the playwright.
Attend a live play production at Hart or in a professional theatre
Students must attend a live play production during the semester and write a five paragraph analytical essay about the experience based on elements of theatre they have learned in class. This is a very important assignment and has a large impact on grade. Students who cannot afford the price of a ticket may earn one through service at a production. 100 exam weighted points... due after Thanksgiving Break

Monolgues and Scenes
Students will learn a short modern monologue from the text book or elsewhere and perform in a short duologue or short group scene as a final in performance. These performances should be memorized and staged both in class and at home. Scenes will be graded on a commonly determined rubric and comments and critiques will be given to help the student become more self-aware and become a better performer.
